End of Walloon grants: what changes on 1 October 2026

30 September 2026 is the last day to apply for a Walloon renovation grant. What replaces it, who qualifies, and what still remains afterwards.

By the RhinoEnergy advisersUpdated on 8 min read

The end of Walloon renovation grants is set for 30 September 2026. The SPW Énergie states it plainly on the official page of the scheme: every grant application, for the audit as well as for the works and including the final invoice, must be submitted by that date at the latest. After that, the counter closes for this scheme.

From 1 October 2026, Wallonia will no longer support energy renovation through direct grants but through two loans: the Rénopack and the Rénoprêt. Both products already exist today at the Société wallonne du crédit social; what changes is their framework, with far stricter selection based on the home's EPB label.

We are a few days from the deadline. This article therefore answers three practical questions: can you still file an application before 30 September, will your home entitle you to anything afterwards, and what remains in any case once the switch has happened.

What exactly ends on 30 September 2026

The temporary support scheme in force since 14 February 2025 comes to an end. In practice, for a file to be admissible:

  • the application must be submitted by 30 September 2026 at the latest, before midnight;
  • the final invoice must be part of the file: ordering the works is not enough, they must be completed and invoiced;
  • the invoices must be dated no later than 30 September 2026;
  • the oldest balance invoice may not be more than two years old at the time of the application.

In other words, a quote signed today for a job starting in November no longer falls under the current scheme. This is not an administrative formality you can work around: the invoice date decides. The official Prime Habitation page on energie.wallonie.be (in French) remains the reference for the exact documents required, and our guide to home renovation grants in Wallonia explains how the closing scheme works.

Can you still complete a file before the deadline?

In the vast majority of cases, no — and it is better to know that now than to rush a badly prepared job. The reason is simple: under the current scheme almost every item requires a housing audit carried out before works begin, and you then have to add the auditor's lead time, the works themselves and the invoicing.

There is one exception, and only one that is still usable: the roof. Roofing works and roof or loft insulation qualify without a prior audit. If your roofer has finished the job and can invoice you before 30 September, the file still stands. At this point in the calendar, that is the only realistic scenario.

Three useful reflexes if this is your situation:

  1. ask the contractor for a balance invoice dated 30 September at the latest, not a deposit invoice;
  2. check that the quote and the invoice state the technical characteristics of the insulation (thickness, thermal conductivity, R value);
  3. submit the application online without waiting for the last day: an incomplete file filed on the evening of the 30th can no longer be corrected.

If your project concerns walls, windows, heating or ventilation, the deadline is out of reach. It is better to prepare the file for the next scheme, starting with the audit. Our roofing and insulation pages summarise what a proper quote for those items contains.

What is announced for 1 October: Rénopack and Rénoprêt

Note the status of what follows. The elements below come from the Walloon Government press release of 16 July 2026 and from the news item published by the SPW Énergie. At the time of writing, the corresponding decree has not been found published in the Belgian Official Gazette: these are therefore announced arrangements, not yet an enforceable legal text. Everything below should be read as conditional, and checked again when you apply.

The announced principle: direct grants would disappear in favour of two loans.

  • The Rénopack would be a 0% loan with a reduction of the capital to be repaid, scaled to household income.
  • The Rénoprêt would be a preferential-rate loan, with no capital reduction, for higher incomes, landlords and co-ownerships.
Announced category Reference income Announced arrangement
C1 up to €28,900 Rénopack at 0%, capital reduction of 50%
C2 €28,900 to €41,100 Rénopack at 0%, capital reduction of 40%
C3 €41,100 to €67,100 Rénopack at 0%, capital reduction of 15%
C4 €67,100 to €122,800 Rénoprêt, no capital reduction

Figures announced in the press release of the Walloon Energy Minister of 16 July 2026 (in French). To be confirmed by official publication.

The announced ceilings would be €75,000 for a single-family house and €60,000 per dwelling for a flat. A prior energy audit would remain compulsory to access the financing.

An honest reading of the shift: for a low-income household undertaking a deep renovation, a 0% loan with half the capital written off may be worth more than a reduced grant. For a household in category C3, a 15% reduction on borrowed capital is clearly less generous than the current system. And for many owners the real break is not the amount, it is the entry condition.

The real filter is your EPB label

This is the point few people saw coming. The announced support would be reserved for the least efficient homes, with an obligation of result after the works:

  • a home rated EPB G or F would have to reach at least label D (announced threshold: ESPEC ≤ 340 kWh/m².year);
  • a home rated EPB E would have to reach at least label C (announced threshold: ESPEC ≤ 255 kWh/m².year);
  • a home already rated EPB D or better would no longer open any entitlement, whatever the household income.

If your EPB certificate reads D, C or better, the conclusion is clear: 30 September 2026 is, in practice, the last opportunity for Walloon regional support for your works. That is not a reason to give up on renovating — insulation still pays for itself through energy savings — but it is a reason to know before you build your budget. Our energy grants page tracks how support evolves across the three Regions.

If your certificate reads E, F or G, you are on the contrary the target of the new scheme. In that case, having the housing audit carried out now is the most useful thing you can do: it would remain the compulsory gateway and it gives you, in any event, the logical order of the works.

What does not change after 1 October

Two federal tax advantages remain, independently of the Walloon reform.

Advantage Who Main conditions
6% VAT on renovation All of Belgium Home more than 10 years old, more than 50% private use, works invoiced by the contractor
Tax reduction for roof insulation Wallonia only 30% of the spending incl. VAT, capped at €4,020 (2025 income) and €4,120 (2026 income)

6% VAT is a federal rule: in a home more than 10 years old used privately, most renovation works qualify for that rate, provided the contractor buys the materials and invoices them together with the labour. Our guide to 6% VAT on renovation sets out the wording that must appear on the invoice.

The tax reduction for roof insulation is reserved for people domiciled in the Walloon Region on 1 January of the tax year. It is worth 30% of the actual spending including VAT, capped at €4,020 for 2025 income and €4,120 for 2026 income, for a home occupied for at least 5 years, with insulation of a thermal resistance R of at least 2.5 m²K/W and works carried out by a contractor. The amount goes in code 3317 of the tax return. The full conditions are on the FPS Finance page on roof insulation (in French and Dutch).

In other words: even a home rated D that would lose every regional entitlement still keeps two real tax levers on a roofing job.

What to do this week, depending on your situation

  • Roofing job finished or nearly finished: get the balance invoice dated 30 September at the latest and submit the application immediately.
  • Home rated EPB E, F or G, project still to be built: do not chase the deadline. Have the housing audit carried out and wait for the official publication of the new rules before signing.
  • Home rated EPB D or better: reason in terms of returns and comfort rather than regional support, while keeping 6% VAT and, for the roof, the tax reduction.
  • In every case: keep signed quotes, invoices, technical data sheets and before-and-after photos.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still apply for a Walloon renovation grant after 30 September 2026?

No. According to the SPW Énergie, every application, final invoice included, must be submitted by 30 September 2026 at the latest, with invoices dated no later than that day. A file submitted on 1 October is no longer admissible under this scheme.

My home is rated EPB D: will I still be entitled to Walloon support after 1 October?

According to the arrangements announced on 16 July 2026, no: support would be reserved for homes rated EPB E, F or G. Those arrangements have not yet been found published in the Belgian Official Gazette, so check energie.wallonie.be before giving up on a project.

Does the Rénopack already exist, or is it a new product?

The Rénopack and the Rénoprêt are loans already offered today by the Société wallonne du crédit social. What would change on 1 October 2026 is their framework: access conditions tied to the EPB label, income categories and the announced capital reduction.

Can I still have works done without an audit before the deadline?

Only roofing works and roof or loft insulation escape the compulsory prior audit under the current scheme. For every other item the audit must precede the works, which makes the 30 September deadline unreachable if nothing has started yet.

What support remains after the grants end?

The 6% VAT rate for renovation works in a home more than 10 years old, and the federal tax reduction for roof insulation reserved for Walloon residents: 30% of the spending, capped at €4,020 for 2025 income and €4,120 for 2026 income.
