Heat pumps in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia

A heat pump draws energy from the air or the ground to heat your home and hot water, without gas or heating oil. The better insulated the home, the more efficient it is. A RhinoEnergy adviser checks the feasibility of your project before putting you in touch with up to 3 installers.

Air-to-water, air-to-air or ground source?

The air-to-water heat pump is the most common choice in renovation: it extracts heat from the outside air and supplies your radiators or underfloor heating, as well as your domestic hot water. A ground source heat pump draws heat from the ground through boreholes or buried collectors; more expensive to install, it offers steadier efficiency in winter.

An air-to-air heat pump heats the air in the rooms directly, much like reversible air conditioning. Cheaper, it suits a flat or works as a supplement, but it does not produce hot water and is often excluded from regional grants. The choice therefore depends on your home, your current heating system and your hot water needs.

A heat pump in an older house?

It is possible, but the key question is the flow temperature needed to heat the house. A heat pump performs best between 35 and 55 °C. If your radiators need very hot water because the house loses a lot of heat, electricity consumption rises and the benefit shrinks.

Insulating the roof first, replacing the weakest windows or fitting larger radiators in some rooms is often enough to make the project worthwhile. A hybrid heat pump, working alongside the existing boiler, can also serve as a transition. The adviser looks at these options with you before any quote request. The aim is to avoid an oversized or unsuitable unit.

VAT, grants and certification

From 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2030, the supply and installation of a heat pump in a private home qualifies for 6% VAT, whatever the age of the property. Regional grants depend on the region, the type of heat pump and often your income. In Flanders, heat pumps are among the works still supported by Mijn VerbouwPremie, whose amounts and conditions were revised in 2026. As these schemes change regularly, the adviser calculates them for you.

For some grants, the installer must hold RESCert heat pump certification. RhinoEnergy points you towards qualified professionals who carry out a proper sizing study rather than a rough estimate. This study takes into account the heat losses of the house, the existing emitters and your hot water needs, to choose the right output.

Frequently asked questions

Heat pump: your questions

How much does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

Expect to pay generally between €9,000 and €18,000 including VAT and installation, depending on output and hot water production. A well-insulated house needs a less powerful, and therefore cheaper, unit.

Do I need to replace my radiators?

Not always. If the house is reasonably well insulated, the existing radiators may be enough at a moderate temperature. Otherwise, replacing some radiators with low-temperature models may be necessary.

What VAT rate applies to a heat pump in 2026?

VAT is 6% for the supply and installation of a heat pump in a private home, including homes less than 10 years old, from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2030.

Is a heat pump noisy?

The outdoor unit makes a fan noise comparable to a household appliance. Its location should be chosen carefully, away from bedrooms and neighbours, which the installer checks during the site visit.

Are there grants for heat pumps?

Yes, in all three regions, subject to conditions. The amount depends on the region, the type of heat pump and often your income, and the schemes change regularly. Your RhinoEnergy adviser calculates them with you.
